Website Not Showing on Google? 7 Reasons Why (And How to Fix It)

You have built a website, launched it, waited patiently — and Google still shows nothing. If you are searching for your own business and coming up empty, you are not alone. This is one of the most common frustrations small business owners face online, and it is almost always fixable. This guide covers every reason a website might not appear on Google and exactly what to do about each one.

Website Not Showing on Google? Check If Your Site Is Indexed First

Before diagnosing the problem, find out whether Google knows your site exists. Open Google and search for: site:yourdomain.com

If results appear, Google has indexed at least some of your pages — skip to the section on rankings below. If nothing appears, your site is not in Google’s index yet. Here is why that happens and how to fix it.

Reason 1: Your Site Is Too New

Google does not index new websites instantly. It can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks for a brand new site to appear in search results, depending on how many other sites link to it and how often Googlebot crawls your niche.

Fix: Submit your sitemap to Google Search Console. Go to Sitemaps, paste your sitemap URL (usually yourdomain.com/sitemap_index.xml) and hit Submit. Then use URL Inspection to request indexing for your homepage directly. This tells Google your site exists and prompts a crawl within days rather than weeks.

Reason 2: Search Engine Indexing Is Blocked

This catches out more site owners than you would expect. WordPress has a setting that tells search engines not to index the site — it is intended for use during development and is sometimes accidentally left on after launch.

Check: In WordPress admin, go to Settings → Reading. Look for the checkbox that says “Discourage search engines from indexing this site.” If it is ticked, untick it immediately and save.

Also check your robots.txt file at yourdomain.com/robots.txt. If it contains Disallow: / under User-agent: *, your entire site is blocked from Google.

Reason 3: No External Links Pointing to Your Site

Google discovers new websites by following links from sites it already knows. If no other website links to yours, Googlebot may never find it — even if you have submitted your sitemap. This is especially common for brand new businesses with no online presence yet.

Fix: Get at least a few links pointing to your site quickly. List your business on Google Business Profile, Yelp, your local Chamber of Commerce directory, and any industry-specific directories. Each listing creates a link that helps Google find and trust your site faster. For web design businesses, listing on Clutch.co is particularly valuable.

Reason 4: Thin or Duplicate Content

Google may choose not to index pages it considers low quality. If your pages have fewer than 300 words, are near-identical to other pages on your site, or are obviously templated without unique value, Google may crawl them but decide not to include them in its index.

Fix: Every page on your site should have at least 400 to 600 words of genuinely useful content unique to that page. Your homepage, service pages and about page all need original copy that specifically addresses what your business does and who it helps.

Reason 5: Your Site Is Too Slow

Google uses page speed as both a ranking factor and a crawl signal. If your site takes longer than 3 seconds to load, Google may crawl it less frequently, index fewer pages and rank them lower. Slow sites are particularly common with shared hosting and unoptimised WordPress installs.

Check your speed: Run your URL through Google PageSpeed Insights. A mobile score below 50 needs urgent attention. Common fixes include enabling caching via a plugin like LiteSpeed Cache, compressing images, removing unused plugins and upgrading your hosting plan.

Reason 6: You Are Searching for the Wrong Thing

Many small business owners search for their own business name and expect to appear in the results for their service. These are two completely different things.

Searching “John Smith Plumbing” will usually show your website quickly — branded searches are easy to rank for. But appearing for “plumber in Los Angeles” is a competitive SEO challenge that takes months of consistent effort, regardless of how good your website is.

If you want to appear for service-based keywords, you need an ongoing SEO strategy — not just a website.

Reason 7: Technical SEO Errors

Missing or incorrect canonical tags, hreflang errors, broken internal links and malformed sitemaps can all prevent Google from indexing your pages correctly. These are harder to spot without the right tools.

How to check: Google Search Console → Indexing → Pages. This shows exactly which of your pages are indexed, which are excluded and why. The most common exclusion reasons are duplicate content, noindex tags and crawl errors.

Reason 7: Technical SEO Errors

How Long Until Your Site Appears on Google?

After fixing the issues above:

  • Indexing (appearing at all): 1 to 14 days after requesting indexing in Search Console
  • Ranking on page 1 for your brand name: 1 to 4 weeks
  • Ranking for competitive service keywords: 3 to 12 months of consistent SEO work

If your site is not indexed within 2 weeks of submission, there is likely a technical issue that needs professional diagnosis. Our free website strategy call includes a quick SEO health check — we will tell you exactly what is blocking your site from Google.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my website not showing up on Google?

The most common reasons are: the site is too new and not yet indexed, WordPress search engine visibility is turned off, no external sites link to you, your content is too thin, or your site is too slow. Check Google Search Console for the specific issue.

How do I get my website to show on Google fast?

Submit your sitemap to Google Search Console, use URL Inspection to request indexing for your key pages, and get at least 3 to 5 links from other websites pointing to yours. This combination typically gets a new site indexed within 1 to 2 weeks.

Does having a website automatically mean I will appear on Google?

No. Launching a website does not automatically notify Google. You need to actively submit your site via Google Search Console and ensure there are no technical barriers to indexing.

One common technical barrier is a misconfigured robots.txt file blocking search engines by accident. Use our free Robots.txt Generator to create a clean, correct file and rule this out in minutes.
